It's out dated and unfortunately some people still accept this extremely ignorant concept. Be proud of all that you are and represent the skin you're in! Halle has the right to classify her child as she wants. Religion example hit it on the nail.
2. Establishing a "mixed race" group isn't going to fix anything. Humans are way too categorical. Next, we'll be trying to distinguish "how mixed" ppl are. Not to mention race is completely negligent when 2 ppl of one race have a child who looks like a completely different race.
3. Race is a social factor moreso than it is a biological. It only exist because of humanity. Therefore, this is all very pointless. But because we do exist, we have to deal. So while we are dealing, lets go ahead and remember that you are what society says you are. And in Nahla's case, it isn't white. You haven't heard anyone arguing her being white. Know why? Bc in the bk of all our minds we all (black and white) still have that society state of mind. The one that tells us she is non-white. So she will face "black" problems.
4. "White" isn't even a race. Its an idea that became broader as more kinds of ppl in this country strove for the American dream. Its another way to keep "whites" ontop of the society. Don't believe me? Do you know what ppl call a wealthy black person? White. Or "passing". This whole "mixed" group thing will only progress that kind of thinking. Just as many Jews and middle easterns have been, a mixed individual will soon ne thrown under the "white blanket". And we will just end up back where we started: a black and "white" world.
Where the definition of a white is "not black".
5. We are all mixed anyway. Which further justifies what I said earlier: soon, we will question "how mixed"? No one is pure. That idea goes as far bk as chatell slavery. White society then wanted things to stay pure bc of racism.
6. I can see why ppl want a mixed race group. Identity issues is part of it (but don't you think children of only mixed ethnicity go through the same? Ex: a black Haitian and Cuban child) And because of how serious a role race STILL plays in America, who wouldn't play the "mixed card" when they got the chance? I'm only saying it wont fix anything. And it will prove pointless in the longtime.
7. Lastly, just something to consider. A fair "black" person with "white" features, in societies eyes, is no different from a mixed person. Nor is there a difference between a "black / white" looking mixed person from a black/white person. And to REALLY put icing on the cake, you do realize there are more ppl in the world than blacks and whites...I am black who ppl think are biracial and my fiance is a mexican-american who's parents are both Mexican but he just so happens looks "white". If we have children, ppl might think they are mixed black and white. But even if they come out looking completely blk, they will still be biracial and multi ethnic! (Hispanic).

Lesson is, you are what society says u r. Period.

Re: Halle Berry Says Her Daughter Is Black; Mixed-Race and Others Up in Arms

Racism is a real reality for many people. In general though, how one chooses to handle the "identity" issue with their children is a very personal situation. It is interesting how often so many people choose to judge these life choices.

Re: Halle Berry Says Her Daughter Is Black; Mixed-Race and Others Up in Arms

In my personal opinion I believe Halle Berry is entitled to her opinion. If this woman believes her daughter is African American then that's her own right. Besides little Nahla is an African American girl, I happen to agree with Halle when she talks about the One Drop Rule! If people really think about it White people are going to see that child as Black. The bottom line is racism is alive and well, and there only making it bad not only for themselves but for the child as well....

Re: Halle Berry Says Her Daughter Is Black; Mixed-Race and Others Up in Arms

.
For several years I have run numerous Mixed-Race websites
and I can honestly say that the "black" Americans have been
some of the largest advocates of Mixed-Race identity (despite
all the lies about them claiming the exact opposite is true).
.
In additon -- it was a "black" American (Mildred Loving)
who got the racist 'One-Drop Rule' BANNED in the U.S.
in 1967 AND it was a "black" American (representative
John Conyers and his colleagues at the 'National Black
Caucus') that successfully fought to have the 'Multiracial'
/ 'Mixed-Race' option returned to U.S. government forms.
.
Also, the following link contains information on the racist,
reeking ODR ('One-Drop Rule') -- which, thank goodness,
has finally been legally "cleared from the air" of the USA:
.
http://groups.yahoo.com/gro...
.
Related Links:
.
http://www.facebook.com/not...
.
http://www.facebook.com/all...
.

Re: Lifetime Movie “Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story”

If you don't love Taraji P. I am a white woman married to a black man and I know I take everything racist said about black people (by white people) personally. I feel like.. this is my FAMILY they're talking about -- my husband and my children. When I hear racist comments (or god forbid, the "N" word) I feel hurt and anger on a very deep level. I hope you can find a way to get through to your husband, to make him understand that he needs to be in your corner, that you are his family now and that his loyalty needs to lie with you. Aside from that, I would also refuse to be around anyone who makes racist jokes about you or insults you. When my husband's friends and family make jokes about Mexicans it makes me feel very uncomfortable and offended. They say things like "If you are not white, your not right" and say tons of put-downs/jokes about me being Mexican. Recently I told them I didn't get sunburned very often and the reply was "haha, that is the only good thing about being Mexican."

It is really damaging my relationship with my husband because he doesn't talk to his friends and family and let them know this is not okay with him. I have told the people that their comments are rude and racist but it really hasn't seemed to make a difference. They just say that I can not take a joke.

Re: My Mixed Son Called the “N” Word. I asked my ten year old what he thought my reaction would have been, his response to the mom in his mom voice (I hope you're still with me) "Oh so stupidity runs in your family." This will enable them to adjust better to comments such as this, ect. These days and times, children are confronted with negative comments at an early age which makes it a little more difficult to shelter them. The more information a child has, according to age appropriate explanations, the better off they will be.

Re: 46% of Mississippi Republicans Think Interracial Marriage Should be Illegal

I'm sure Alabama, Arkansas, & perhaps Georgia Republicans feel the same way. To be honest, I was a little worried he wouldn't be interested because the cover showed 3 girls and was leaning a little to....what we'd say is traditional "girl" decorations. :) Anyway, when I told him that Amy was mixed and the book might discuss that a little bit, he was very interested. He read it in no time and was excited to tell me how much he enjoyed it. So...I need to get the next book in the series. Anyway, definitely a PLUS for us to have this resource.

Re: She’s Japanese, African-American, Korean and White. Too many blacks accept the one drop rule out of habit since it was foisted up our community which is a 'fact' those angry whites and biracials tend to 'deliberately' ignore particular when referencing some high profile individual. I have no problem accepting biracials as 'completely and totally separate' from blacks. As far as Halle's goes...what about the biracial bill of rights that states this? It gives us a sense of belonging, it's what makes us who we are. Yes, we're from the same God, but he thought enough of us to make us different for a reason and we should celebrate that. If He wanted us to simply "bleed the color red" then he wouldn't have made us so differently.

As a mixed race woman (and author of the book, "Just Because I'm Mixed Doesn't Mean I'm Confused"-not for a plug, but just to let you know how serious I take this topic), I find it offensive for people to pretend it doesn't matter, while also relieved that there is now some communication about it-whether it be negative or positive. I grew up during a time where for the first 13 years of my life, I didn't have a term to describe myself. The terms "biracial" and "mixed" weren't around for me in the 80's. Some people may not know what that feels like, but for a child, it's like not knowing your real parents. There's no point of reference.

Do I think Halle communicated her feelings about the topic the wrong way? Absolutely. I think she meant to state that she was instilling her Black heritage into her daughter's life so that when the world sees her as a Black woman, she'll be able to deal with those reactions. Even if she's mixed, she'll experience things that other minorities experience. Period. Mixed, beautiful, the daughter of a famous mother, whatever-it will still be there.

On a final note, in terms of custody, when are we going to start talking about the REAL issue, the best situation for her living arrangements?

Re: Halle Berry Says Her Daughter Is Black; Mixed-Race and Others Up in Arms

You would think it wouldn't be that serious, but for a good number of reasons, it can be. Depending on what is being talked about. In America, unlike in a lot of other countries, the government is constantly asking people to classify themselves racially. For people of mixed race, they were usually boxed in to picking one part of their heritage; leaving many to feel as if they were denying part of their identity. There's been a strong push to have the government expand on its classifications and finally, they are (to some degree).

Now while it may not particularly matter to me if Halle says she relates to her child as Black, some mixed-race people find her comments a step in the wrong direction - the past. So I get it, but again, I also feel as if those who are coming down so harshly on Halle are guilty of doing the very thing that they've accused others of - making judgments on their identity.

Re: Halle Berry Says Her Daughter Is Black; Mixed-Race and Others Up in Arms

why do people always want to play the race card? what's the big deal? when we bleed, the color is red and when we die we ALL will have to stand before the same "GOD and be held accountable for what we do or not do!
